Form of Village Government:
Village was organized on July 30, 1924. The Greenwood Lake Union Free School District serves the Village and surrounding area and relies upon its own taxing powers granted by the State to raise revenues.
The Mayor of the Village is the presiding member of the Village Board and is current elected for a term of four years and is eligible to succeed himself. In addition to the Mayor, there are four Trustees that serve on the Village Board and are currently elected for four year terms. Both the Mayor and Trustees are elected at large.
The Village appoints its Building Inspector, Village Clerk, Commissioner of Public Works, Village Engineering firm and Village Attorney.

Topography:
The Village is situated at the north end of nine mile long Greenwood Lake in a valley formed by Bellvale Mountain to the west, and mountains contained within Sterling Forest State Park to the east. Elevations in the village reach approximately 1,040 above mean sea level (msl) in the vicinity of Bellvale Mountain, while elevations reach approximately 1,100 msl on the easterly slopes. The lake is located at a base elevation of 622 msl.
